It’s been a year since Ariana Debose’s iconic, and awkward ‘Angela Bassett’ rap at the BAFTAs, and even though we’re still not over it, the American actress definitely is.

The Hollywood actress left celebrities in the crowd at the 2023 BAFTAs with the rap, but social media said enough words for all of them. As we mark the year anniversary, let’s take a look back at the iconic rap, and Debose’s reaction afterward. Angela Bassett, do your thing!

Ariana performed Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves and We Are Family, with her own individual rap, shouting out the female nominees at the British Film and Television Awards Show.

The line that stuck in everyone’s head was “Angela Bassett did the thing,” but there were also many other memorable lines in there including “Viola Davis my woman King.”

Although the raps had social media in hysterics and creating memes for days, the crowd didn’t seem so impressed and their awkward looks were enough to make us crawl under the sofa.

However, fans couldn’t help but notice Jamie Lee Curtis getting into the spirit and bopping her head along, as she was given the line: “Jamie Lee you are all of us!”

The Halloween star later went on to defend Debose, as she told Entertainment Tonight: “Why the f*** are people giving her a hard time? I don’t understand it, she is fantastic and so full of life and love and spirit.”

It looks like the social media hype may have gotten too much for the West Side Story star, who reportedly deactivated her Twitter account shortly after it began going viral.

Although she had a painfully awkward reception at the British award show, the vibes were lifted at the SAG Awards, where the 33-year-old let herself become the brunt of the joke, just a week after it all went down in London.

As she took to the stage to present the 2023 SAG awards, Debose said to co-host Diego Luna: “Diego, do the thing,” as the crowd erupted into laughter, one of these being THE Angela Bassett.

The camera panned to the Strange Days star, who couldn’t hold back her laughter while blowing a kiss to Ariana.

Bassett even joined the joke at the 2023 NAACP Awards when she picked up the Entertainer of the Year Award.

“I guess Angela Bassett did the thing,” she said, as once again, the audience burst into laughter.
